While modding a few vintage cans with ruined earpads, I noticed the night-and-day difference the pads can make. I am amazed at the attention that $xxxx cables get, and the lack of attention $xx earpads get. Replacing or tweaking pads, the same can goes from bassy and no highs, to balanced bass and airy highs.

Do you people have similar experiences with different pads?

EDIT: I just noticed that this forum, for instance, includes "cables" but not "ear pads". I can assure you all that pads are critical for getting the sound just right.

EDIT2: I suppose an example would be in order. While restoring a vintage Grundig can to its former (?) glory, I had to replace the stock pads. The stock pads ruined the treble by exposing too little of the driver to the ear. My new pads exposed the entire driver.
