Hey all. I'm getting an ipod in a couple days, and I figured I'd start ripping my cds now in anticipation. I wanted to get the best rip I could, so I downloaded EAC and lame. I set it all up, but maybe I did something wrong or something, because EAC isn't detecting any of my cds. All of my other audio programs are detecting them just fine. Anyone got any advice?

This has happened to me after installing WinXP. I have a few other programs installed (ClonyXXL, Blindsuite) that can somewhat take over the CD drives. I had to disable the ASPI layer in ClonyXXL to get EAC to detect any drives.

If you don't have ClonyXXL or the like; check in the drop-down drive list. Sometimes the wrong drive is selected.

Get Nero's ASPI layer (wnaspi32.dll). It should be available as a free download. Drop the DLL into your EAC directory. Under EAC interface options, you can then check "installed external ASPI interface". That should do it.

tried that, still not working . . . i'm starting to dislike this program

No, no, never give up hope with software. OK, let's do some simple troubleshooting... what's your OS, first? Does other ripping and/or burning software work fine? Does EAC give you an error message, and if so, what is it? Are you using the latest (v.95pb3) version of EAC? Do you have more than one optical drive, and if so, have you tried ripping from those?

i'm running windows xp pro. other ripping/burning software (i.e., realplayer, musicmatch) works fine. EAC doesnt give me any errors, just says that theres no audio cd in the drive. i have the latest version of EAC and the latest stable version of lame. i have two optical drives, and it wont work from either of them.

If the CD-ROM drive is one with a drawer, try opening the drawer, putting the CD in, then letting EAC close the drawer by pressing the eject button. EDIT: The software eject button on the EAC GUI, not the eject button on the CD-ROM itself.

Also, sometimes the autoplay software pops up the first time -- I usually have to kill WMP.

I had this very same problem on a system I built for my sister. I never did sort it out. I originally thought it was because it was a combo drive (CDR/DVD-ROM Lite On), but I have a combo drive in my laptop that works like a charm. I was using WinXP Pro as well, in an AMD Shuttle system. If anyone figures this out, please post the results. I have never had a problem with EAC on either my desktop or laptop
