On a perfect disc, under perfect conditions, there shouldn't be any. But the main advantage of secure rip is that you KNOW your rips are as accurate as possible, and any abnormalities are detected and reported.

It was not enabled. I have now enabled it. EAC seems to start out consistently ripping at 0.8X, but then just stops part way through the first track. With my Samsung dvd writer, it starts a bit faster, but dies with it as well.
It seems that EAC does not want to write to a remote networked drive. Writing to a local drive (10000rpm sata), ripping speeds are up, in secure mode, to 8X, which is nowhere near the promised 20X. In Burst mode it does 25X.
