I rip CD to mp3 using EAC and LAME (3.98).
 
The settings/parameters are set to v-0, which should result in bitrates of ~245 kbps.
 
But if I look at my songs, the bitrates are more in the region of 160 kbps average.
 
It's mostly classic jazz.
 
Am I doing something wrong?

There is probably nothing wrong with your settings. Certain types of sounds are simply easier to compress than others. I guess your music does not have much high frequencies, not much stereo effects and little fast attacks.
 
So what song are you talking about exactly?

FWIR Jazz is supposed to be easy to compress. You could always use ABR if you are paranoid. (I would be)

Digital audio is usually quantized in 16 bit, meaning that the value of each sample varies between [-32767;+32768]. If your music is loud the top (in absolutes) values are reached, if your music is recorded more softly, only the lower values are used, meaning that there are less figures used, meaning a better compression rate.

That's one of the reasons anyway.
