When trying to dig up an answer about the 0404 USB, I discovered this on the E-MU site just now.......the Tracker Pre 0404 USB:

E-MU Systems - Tracker Pre USB 2.0 - USB Audio/MIDI Interfaces

It is more of an upgraded 0202 USB than an 0404 USB with some things missing........

1. It uses the CS4392 DAC chip as does the 0202 USB, not the AK4396 of the 0404.

2. It has two of the same mic pres as the 0404 USB (the 0202 USB has only one mic pre.)

3. It has the same ADC as either the 0202 USB or the 0404 USB.

4. The main analog output doesn't have a level control on the box, like the 0202 USB.

5. And like the 0202 USB, it doesn't require a wall wart--but you can use one if you wish, unlike the 0202 USB. From the E-MU site:

"CurrentMorph™, a patent-pending circuit design, allows Tracker Pre to offer +48V phantom power and use premium high-power converters while using only USB bus power."

CurrentMorph???? I think VoltageMorph would be the more technically correct description.....use of the term "morph" not withstanding. At least they are addressing that issue up front this time around, because it was never clearly stated how the 0202 USB or 0404 USB managed to generate the 48V phantom power and attain the max output voltages on the main out and headphone out that are in the specs.

Seems to me at this point, it sure looks like it has an edge over the 0202 USB if you ever need to use a stereo mic, but not anything that would make it better when used strictly as a USB DAC.

Also of note.......there is a new driver package that covers the 0202 USB/0404 USB/Tracker Pro available on the E-MU site. A bit over 69.2 MB, which seems oddly large compared to previous versions.
