Found a bad cap on my zamp. Never mind...
This is a weird one I am struggling with, and not sure if it's the sign of a dying DAC. This piece of gear has been in use for about a full decade now anyway.
Turned on my headphone amp today with foobar2000 as usual, but the output from my DAC was massively distorted and could not figure out the cause. I tried different players, ones I had never done any customization to, to no avail. The weirdest part is it sounded perfectly fine from the DACs built in headphone out.
I tried all sorts of things, the closest to a normal sound I got was by turning the DAC halfway down in Windows 7 audio mixer, but if you turned up the amp to compensate you could hear it was still distorting.
To be sure it wasn't an amp problem, I plugged in a DAP to my amp, and it sounded perfect, as i would have expected.
No new software on my computer or anything that I can think of that would do it. what should i check for? is the only thing to do try another USB DAC in place and see if the problem persists?
