I would like to know if you burn your data/movies/whatever on DVD-R or DVD+R media? I don't really know what the difference between these two is anyway? Which ones do you think have bigger chance of lasting longer in the future?

Regarding availability or actual lifespan of the media?

DVD-R is a simpler format that more stand-alone players support but is theoretically more expensive to make, while DVD+R is a more advanced format with less compatibility but is theoretically cheaper to make. I use +R because I have a +R-only burner. Almost all burners these days can burn both and all new stand-alone players can play both though so it's mainly a factor of which media is cheaper (and the theoretical cost of manufacture really hasn't impacted the price of the media, they're both about the same right now).

The lifespan of the media is mainly determined by how it is manufactured and not byt the type. Verbaitim DataLifePlus (packaged in the Jewel cases, not in the spindle) is generally considered to be amoung the best media right now.

I agree. All Verbatim Data Life Plus (including CD-R/RW) are considered to be one of the best quality, so are Taiyo Yuden (the inventors of CD-R technology) media, which I am planning to buy. The price is the same with + or - media, so I don't know which ones to choose.

But I don't understand why should the jewel case packaged media be better than spindle?

+ or - , it does not matter anymore unless you have an older DVD player. If so, get + because on some drives, you can do bit setting, which allows more compatibility with standalones. Whatever you do, get the stuff that is made in Japan if you care about quality (I.E. Taio Yuden).

The ones in the jewel cases are made by Verbaitim while the ones on spindles are rebranded from other makers (some are from good manufactuers, like Ritek, but there is really no way to tell). In other words it's guaranteed quality vs. luck of the draw.

Seconded. I've had excellent luck with these DVD-R's.

I'm still chugging away on my 4x LG burner but when I upgrade to an 8x or higher drive, I'm gonna try out the G05's and see if they are up to the same level as the G04's. Taiyo Yuden is excellent but I think I'll keep buying Riteks until I start having bad luck with them or the price on TY media comes down. I'd try Verbatim but I like to buy spindles of media and according to Mr. Radar if you buy Verbatims in a spindle it's just the luck of the draw whether you'll get a good batch or not. Hmmm, not very promising LOL.

I use a 4X DVD+R burner, and until this thread I didn't know much about the differences. For media I use Sony DVD+R's and CD-R's, I've never had any problems with them.

Booktype setting will fix this for a sammy drive, and I think all other drives work fine with +R.

BTW you post on X-S?
