I have a friend looking for long lasting IEM's that isolate. It would also be nice if they are commonly available. 
 
I would say S4 but I hear the cable is no-so-good.

Meh, nevermind. He lowered the budget to $50. So there is only really one option that seems to be durable, good sounding, and cheap. The NuForce NE-6/7

The new Brainwavz ProAlpha sounds very similar to the M2, is $20 cheaper, and is built better to boot. Unfortunately mp4nation isn't what I'd call readily available but maybe with some convincing...
 
The JVC HA-FXC80 is another one I can suggest. Not the most consumer-friendly sound but very good nonetheless and well-built, too.

I don't care. He said sub $100 and I was excited about all the possibilities. But no, $50 is the cut off. That is not enough to get your feet wet.

if you're trying to introduce him to hi-fi, isn't it easier just to give him an inexpensive pair for Christmas? S4s or HJE900s won't break the bank... :3

If you look in joker's sig, he has a thread with 118 IEMs (more coming!) reviewed in a very orderly fashion.  I suggest you start there.  Theres a whole bunch of sub-$50 IEMs in there.
