I've been reading various comments to the effect that the DT990 has more bass but equal detail and overall quality compared to the DT880 which sounds more like the HD600. Personally, I find the DT880 sound similar to the HD6x0 headphones but with a brighter and less laid back sound. For those who have tried both headphones, how would you describe the DT990 compared to the DT880? Curious...

DT990: stronger upper bass gives more warmth to the sound - perhaps a bit dark overall (but this can be tuned somewhat with cables, etc). Not quite as detailed than DT880 but still very good detail.

DT880: more extended at frequency extremes, wider soundstaging, more unforgiving of crap sources. Cardas cable upgrade is reported to be extremely good.

Same comfort levels.

I found the DT990 to have more and smoother detail than the stock DT 880's. I own both. DT990's have silky mids and better bass extention. Both have an equal wide and deep sound stage. And with a Mogammi cable upgrade, the DT 990's blow everything out of the water. The cable upgrade to the DT 880's made a good difference and is well worth doing but it did not equal the cable upgrade responce witnessed on the DT 990's.

Reply: Err.. is this some kind of cheap shot on my age or my musical preferences? Maybe I am misunderstanding your sarcasm.

Does the DT 990 excel at any certain genre? This would include things like classical, rock, opera, or even salsa.

What kind of salsa and merengue? Like, lately I've been wondering if Grados would be good for those old NYC albums from the Fania label, which don't always sound quite right on my DT 880...
