Well I picked up some DT880's again, because I've read many positive reviews about how they go with the ANT Amber headphone amp that I also have. So far, my main diet has been with the DT531.
Well, what a surprise these things are when powered by this amp. Similar in tonality to the DT531, and just as grooving somehow, this isnt how I remembered them at all. This is a DT880 with a serious attitude now.
OK, they are still never going to be for bass heads, but this could not in any way be described as boring. Exciting and ferocious midrange abounds, loads of detail, fully extended treble, brain melting dynamics, and the bass, well its fast and agile and not as light weight as I was expecting.
Perhaps its no wonder the Goldrings didnt work out in this system.
I'm now mulling over whether to sell the 531's on at the moment and put some DT990's in its place for a bit of contrast now, since the 880 are at the moment sounding very much like better 531s.
Credit to the 531 though, I still truly believe they deliver a good 90% of the sound quality of the DT880
