I've read some promising things about the DT770 being matched with the headphone out of vintage marantz receivers, but not much on how the Dt880 acts with it. Is the headphone amp in my Marantz 2230 going to be able to drive the DT880 well? Or does the pair require a better headphone amp?

Seems like 600ohm version would be overwhelming and i'll hear some hissing. How would the 250ohm or even 32 ohm versions fair?

My two vintage Marantz (receiver and integrated amp) worked well with my speakers, but not so good with my headphones. Both had very extended and over emphasized highs, which FWIR about the DT880, I suspect may not synergize so well. If your Marantz works properly and doesn't have inferior replacement parts, it should drive a DT880 250 Ohm OK. But I question whether it would do so well enough to get the "magic" out of it. I haven't read enough about the 32 Ohm version of the DT880 to even guess. Any reason you're preferring the DT880? FWIR, not just any amp makes it really open up and sing.

FWIR they have a lively soundstage and perform very well with Jazz which most of music collection consists of. Build quality and comfort look really appealing also. Thanks for the input on how it might not synergize so well.
