do these cans really lack impact for rock music? are they also really slow? To the guys that love these, is rock your main genre?

I don't listen to genuine rock music, but I find that the DT880 does ok with it (have a couple rock CDs). There are plenty of other headphones that do much better with rock.

As for the slowness, well all I can say is that it bothers me. I don't know if it would bother you of course.

When I'm listening to my DT880, the music is usually trip-hop or classical.

Not like most others on this forum I do like DT880 with rock music and my Grados with classical.

Usually everybody says it is the other way around.

It is just a matter of opinion.

Relative to what? DT880's sound better than most headphones out there, but I'd say they're not the pinnacle for rock music. I think almost anyone would be satisfied with them for rock, if they had not heard, or did not know of other possible options.

ok... just in terms of speed against the hd555. which is what I am upgrading from. Also considering ad900 and ad2000. Just getting different angles with my research before I pick one

DT880's tend to sound a bit airy with older rock, but not with all the rock. It pretty much depends on the song, but there are situations when I wish there would be more impact.

They sound SWEET.

Just my 2c.

Yah: recabled w/decent amp, they're outstanding for older stuff: Steppenwolf Magic carpet's really butt-kicking. DT880 (2003) also.

Nah: rock w/hd595's, K501s.

I can see the 880s being used for slower paced rock but I tend to use mine mostly for jazz and female voiced music.

For me it's not only the speed (or lack there of) of the DT880 but also it's ability to handle a multitude of simultanious instruments and more advanced recordings (separation and soundstage i guess). This comes from comparison with my MS1. I generally prefer the MS1 for rock music, but the more "advanced" the recording the stronger the pull of the DT880.

I feel that they good for most kinds of music but not great for rock, they lack a bit of bass and impact for rock. For rock, a Grado is generally considered a better choice.
