As part of the context, I bought some dt831s a few months ago. I put in a couple of 150 ohm resistors between the drivers and cable. I found this calmed the brightness considerably, but not completely. I decided to try the dt831s + 150 ohm with a 75 ohm adapter so 225 ohm total and the brightness is gone and there is very nice bass response. You may lose a tiny bit of detail, but I think overall they sound better with 225 ohm vs. 150 ohm and (of course) much much better with 225 ohm vs. 0 ohm. So anyways if you have some dt831s, you might give it a shot.

I've just tried it by connecting the 831's I have modded with internal 120ohm resistors to my 120-ohm adapter (so 240 ohms total). The bass is definitely boosted a bit, but the sound is a bit muddy. The highs are attenuated, but still seem to have the slight bite/edge characteristic of these headphones. I'm not too fond of this sound, but then again, I'm no Sennheiser apologist.
