Ive heard the DT 990s are really bright and how 650s are good all rounders but how does that compare to ATH-AD900X?

DT990 vs HD600/650 is like a bright hot day vs. a foggy night......totally different.

Beyers are bright,HD600/650s are very dark, and I found the 650s to be amp picky.

I havent heard AD900X so I cant compare the three.

I guess it depends on your other equipment and the type of music/gaming/movies you prefer

DT990s are bright with boosted mid-bass but the overall presentation is clean, expansive and a tad analytical.
HD650 is much more cohessive, not as open as DT990, more mid-centric with way softer treble.

AD900X is more neutralish than both DT990 and HD650.

- Less mid-bass than both DT990 and HD650
- Less bright than DT990
- Brighter than HD650

It's closer to DT880.

Yea I was recommended the 600s/650s because I listen to mostly pop and electronic.
Was looking into if the others met my needs or not.
Thanks.

I have all of these and each has it's strengths/weaknesses.

- AD900's are a good set of cans for $115...nice midrange/treble but a little anemic on the bass.
- DT990's are more V-shaped; very nice bass but the treble can bother some folks. Luckily, I don't have this issue. Can get these for $150ish-excellent value imo.
- HD600's are a very good all-rounder but are twice as expensive. To me these aren't as 'warm' as the 650's...that said, I don't feel the 650's are foggy, veiled, etc. Might have gotten lucky with my particular set or maybe they just pair well with my equipment.

EDIT: in the $150 range, I'd consider the Q701's and do the bass mod...great headphone for the money!

You might also consider the Fidelio X1/X2 as a similarly forgiving headphone with bigger stage, more impactful bass, easier to drive and more luxurious feel.
HD600/HD650 are more neutral and refined, that's the trade off.

Very enticing options. HD 650s, FX1s/FX2s, HE 400S, and AKG 701.
If you had to add comfort factors, driveable factors, etc.
I currently have C&C BH2 Amp, ZuperDac, AQDF v1.2.
Good enough to drive including the planars?
Thanks guys for all your opinions.

I don't have much information about your amplifier.
K701 is the hardest to drive in your list. Then HD650.
Both the Fidelios and the HE400S are pretty easy to drive.

As are the AD900x's...working well from my phone on the low power setting.

In looking at the Q701 thread, it seems they work well with the Dragonfly. I also listen to the Q's out of my phone and they sound great. That said, my phone is a V10 and they trigger the high power setting because their impedance is >50 Ohms.

If your budget is $300 though, the 400S seems like a great recommendation (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/terrific-hifiman-he400s-planar-magnetic-headphones). Haven't heard them but the 400i is my go-to headphone in our home office setup.

I was reading about the 400S, it has caught my eye.
I was reading how it has a slight bass roll off.
Also how changing to Foampads A fixes some of the issue.
Price wise it sounds like a good deal with the combo.
So 400S is cheaper than 650.
Such tough decisions.
Although I am gearing towards the 400S now.
Thanks.

have you thought about other options?
The AKG Q701 is great set of cans, tad on the bright side. It never bothered me and I am very sensitive to overly bright cans. That said, I think there are better options for pop and edm.
The hifiman HE400(blue) has the best quality bass/low mids of any cans I have heard. They are a little funky in the highs but it never bothered me much.
Another option is a set of IEMs. I strongly recommend se215 special ed.

Ive thought about it. I am treating these as my endgame in budget.
Sorry I am totally anti iem because iems dont fit in my ear at all and feel uncomfortable. Im a earbud person. Ill totally take earbud suggestions.
The HE 400 is the basic ones right? Or is this special blue edition?
Thank you.

He's talking about the original HE-400. Not the HE-400S or HE-400i. No longer sold afaik though you should be able to pick up a used pair around $200. Look for rev 2 or rev4, indicated by translucent or transparent drivers.
