Want to upgrade my HD 558s.  Would the DT 880 pro (250 ohm) be a significant upgrade?  Are they in the same league as the HD 600/650 (which are a little too pricey right now for me)?  I'm aware of the sonic differences between the 880s and the 6xx, I just want to be sure it wouldn't be a lateral move, but a step up.

For me, the DT880 (Pro 250) is an upgrade over the HD 598. I use an Audioquest Dragonfly (v1.0) and a (Mayflower Electronics) O2.  Note that I have an HD598, not an HD558.

I'd say the DT880 is a easily a step up from the HD558 or HD598 for that matter. Owned the 558, listened to the 598 a number of times, and the DT880  would come out on top every time IMO. I believe the pros may come in both the 32 and 250ohm versions? the 250 will need a decent amp to drive them properly. Regarding the HD6xx, I personally think they're worth waiting and saving the extra cash for over the Beyers. Now, that being said, I bought the HD600's with every intention of selling my 880's and ended up keeping both.

I've owned the 600 and 650 and currently own the 880 Pro. I listen only to classical orchestral music, and for that at least the pro is easily superior to both Senns, which sound thick and coloured by comparison. Some would still prefer the Senns, but not those looking for true neutrality.

Can't disagree with anything you've said. I do prefer the 880's for classical and acoustic recordings, but for all genres of Rock, Blues and Alternative, the HD600 beats them out IMO. The HD600's are natural sounding, 880's are neutral. Both have there merits and thats why I've kept both. Personally, I think anyone wanting to get into Headfi in a serious way should own both in the beginning. Pretty much the best cans you can own for a reasonable price and compliment each other well. Both can be found pretty cheap on the used market.

The DT 880 Premium are available in 32, 250, and 600 Ohm versions.  Almost all DT-880 Pro available for sale today are 250 Ohm.  A 600-Ohm Pro  version does exist, but it is rare.  I have never heard of a 32-Ohm Pro version, but I would not be surprised if it existed.
