Whats the differences between the DT-990 and the DT-880? I am definitely looking to try the beyer sound, I'm just trying to decide which one I should go with today. I'm looking more for whichever one has more clarity and cleaner bass.

they apparently use the same driver, according to most reviews and comparisons i have read, the dt-990 have more bass quantity while the 880 are more neutral and clean, if you want clarity, definitely go for the 880...i have the 990pro ( same driver as the '05 model, just different enclosure ) and i can tell you the bass is quite pronounced, not to the level of being bloated, but not so "clean" .

One more quick question: I will be getting the headphones before I get my amp. Am I going to be unimpressed with the clarity of the dt-880s compared to a Audio Technica Ad700 unamped? In other words, should I wait until I get the amp to even try them (1-2 weeks) or will they sound decent out of a higher end sound card of a computer until then?

edit: getting the 250 ohm version, cant afford the 600 ohm version

I used to own all these phones. The 05 DT880 and DT990 use the same driver, but DT990 is definitely clearer especially for bass. Besides, the 05 DT990 and the old DT990pro are totally different Phones, their dirvers are not the same.

Good point, especially that the "inventor" doesn't know if the mods give 100% transformation or just changed sound of certain pair of headphones towards others.
The '05 version has got not only the stronger bass, but also sweeter midrange which is actually the trademark of the DT880's '05. It sounds great when you match them with good quality output tubes (Emission Labs?) or a transparent SS amp and very good source which is obligatory for these headphones. Otherwise you'll appreciate more the DT990's with sucked out midrange, piercing trebles and big, boomy, empty bass.
