I don't think you really can but I could be wrong. What is wrong with buying the CD?

Not free, but Linn and Magnatunes sell DRM-free FLAC (in Linn's case, some are 24-bit 192kHZ "studio masters").

The BBC released an entire cycle of Beethoven's symphonies for free, not sure if they are still available.

I don't get this thing about formats being "open source" but whatever...

For commercial music, there's also this canadian outfit (zunior) in addition to magnatunes.

For free music, in addition to archive.org there's also jamendo.

Then there are a bunch of individual artists and such distributing their music this way. And also the stuff that we're not supposed to discuss of course.

Any other non-infringing website out there distributing a lot of music?

Great question...since you mention legally, why not e-mail the artist and ask?
