So, you often hear about manufacturer's "doping" the drivers with some compound solutions to alter sound signature and increase performance. I'm curious about the science behind this. Any ideas how this works?
I am fairly skeptical that painting a compound onto a driver can really improve anything or change much other than its resonant frequency. It could I guess absorb vibrational energy at certain frequencies, but it's not providing any damping if it is just sitting on the driver... I'm really not sure why you would ever want to increase the mass of a driver by burdening it with some coating. It might mike it more rigid I guess, but if it really improved the mass/rigidity ratio you would have thought driver manufactures would do it by default...
