Does this type of player exist? A CD-Player that reads DVD 'Audio' Discs?

I'm going over seas in a few weeks and I'm looking for some way to bring my music. An MP3 player is a bit too expensive considering it will likely be stolen, broken, or unable to be recharged.

I've been looking on Amazon for a simple walkman type cd player that reads dvd discs. It would be way to cumbersome to burn all my music on 700MB cd's, and I could reduce it to around 4-5 disks with DVD's. I don't want a screen that eats battery life when I only want to listen to music. A small LED navigation screen would be a plus though. Another point is that double A batteries are the most commonly available over there, so something w/ those is preferable.

Anyone know if such a player exists?

If I need to break down and buy an MP3 player it will likely be the Zen Vision or the Iaudio X5L.

2 years in Senegal, West Africa. Not a very electronics-friendly environment.

But if the best I can find is a $180 dollar player that doesn't even have good reviews, it might be worth it to pay the extra 70 bucks and risk it with an X5L or Vision. Of course, deciding between the X5L and Vision poses another problem; I wish I could combine a few features from both.

Thanks for the info

So what dark corner of the world are you going to visit?

As far as I know Sony does not support DVD-A, as they have SACDs, I meant I have not seen any, but there is always a first day...that one does not read DVD-A according ot the specs...

He wants to burn all his audio onto a few DVDs, he's not interested in DVD-Audio.

HiMD? I think that'd be a good suggestion... as long as it doesn't get sandy or anything, they're built like a TANK and have good sound quality.

Between the ZVM and X5L, the X5L would definitely be the more durable.

I don't know about now, but it used to be that most DVD players could not cope with DVD-Audio disks. Only certain models, it was an extra feature.

I don't know if the OP really wants to play DVD-Audio discs. It sounds like maybe he just wants to burn 2-channel music onto DVD's. If he used HQ mp3 files, he could fit a lot of music onto a DVD. But that's different than 5.1 DVD-Audio.

It's also different than DAP's. Provided that he doesn't really want DVD-Audio, and really just wants good stereo and got his terminology wrong, then I'd think a hard-disk based DAP (iPod or otherwise) would hold the most stuff in the smallest package. But maybe I don't understand what he's really after.

I see his concern about cost and reliability. I have no idea if a portable DVD player with a bunch of DVD's is really gonna be any more bullet proof than a good DAP. Is the OP taking a laptop along? That would fix it, as most have DVD players anymore, and he could use a sturdy flash-based DAP to listen to, using the DVD's and laptop as a vault of music to rotate to the flash-DAP? (Am I making this too complicated?)

You guys are correct in that I'm not looking for Audio-DVD's. I had no idea such a thing existed. I just want to burn data DVD's with all my MP3 files as a cheaper and more durable solution to a DAP. That way, I can burn, say a few hundred songs onto each disc rather than 100 that a data-CD would allow.

I looked a bit into the HiMD alternative, and it does allow me to reduce the number of discs I would have to bring to about 20, but it seems that all the decent players are $100+ (after all, I'd like it to last the whole 2 years as it'd be VERY difficult to get a replacement over there). Combine that with the media at 20 bucks per 5 discs, and it's quickly approaching DAP cost.

Also, I'm not planning on bringing my laptop as I'm not sure if I will even have electricity. I hear internet cafes are relatively common, so that will have to suffice. The only reasons I would really want my computer are music and internet research, so there is really no need for it if I find reliable music storage. I need to conserve packing space for more essential items.

I actually did order the X5L so I could try it out before making a decision. All suggestions are still welcome, as I have no problem returning it after I receive it. I returned an M3 a couple years ago with no problems from Cowon.

Thanks for the info; I'll continue to look around on the net.

Oh yeah, this post reminds me... Now I need to consider which pair of headphones I should bring... my DT880's or my SR225's... Of course I'll bring some cheap canal phones, but hmm... I'm leaning towards my 225's as they won't require me to bring an amp, but I do usually prefer my 880's.

All I know is that I have burnt music on a DVD and later used a portable dvd player to play it back and fed the signal to my amp/cans. Even if you went with ALAC that means that in a DVD you could put 14 or so CDs worth of music.

If you instead use 192 VBR set at highest setting you could carry with you about 52 music CDs in one DVD. I would suggest a portable DVD that has an small 3.5" or so screen so you could read the titles. Coby makes one that you can get for less than $100. Good luck.

The only downside I see to the DVD Player is the battery life. Most last only 3 hours. I checked out the latest Coby, and it lasts 3 hours; however, I have no idea how that would translate to music-only use. I like the 89 dollar price tag though.
