I've been re-ripping a lot of my music as FLAC -> Lame-Insane. If I replace the old songs in the Zune application with new files with the same tags but different bitrate, will the software be smart enough to update the new files?

I don't know. Shoot a question over to Ceasar to see if the new software will do it, since you won't be using the old stuff for long.

I'm not sure about that, but I do know that if you change the quality sync level from the default level to the maximum after you have already loaded your Zune, it will go back and upgrade the level of everything on your Zune.

update what files..the one on the Zune or on your library ?

The library get updated the moment you overwrite the files.

For updating your Zune content (if not using auto sync), you must delete the content on the Zune and sync back the new content.

if you dont want it to change the songs bitrate, right click your Zune name on the navigation pane, select advanced options go to the quality tab and use the recommended settings for audio and video. Done.
