Does the M30x need an amp to perform at its best?

Even though I have a better set up now, in many ways I still miss my Clip+. It's a great little player with a massive bang to buck ratio IMHO.

Small but mighty. Can drive my Senn HD600 300ohm cans with no problem. I can't believe how much the E6 opens up the soundstage.

  Well you might want to look into a Sandisk Clip Zip Rockboxed with Fiio E6 amp. If you use the Rockbox free software it will take a 64GB micro card. Look at the Sennheiser HD439 or HD449 there pretty cheap now. They will be better than the M30x for sure. Its also very portable.You could get by without the amp but it makes the setup small but mighty. It will play FLAC
 

sound fairly good to me. I want to ask about the HD 439 and Hd 449 that you have mentioned. Are these headphones better than the M30x on sound quality or just the price?

IMO better comfort and sound quality. I would picke either of them over the M50X.
