I was originally thinking about getting a denon 750 but I went through these forums and read all the scary stories about it disintegrating in a few monthes

. So I decided on a dt250. I don't think I'll have any problems with my aiwa CDP(built like a plastic rock, 12mw output) but I also have a mp3 player in the mail. 7mw+7mw and no line out. I've heard tales of gloomy darkness about the dt250 with 5mw sharp MDs so I'm wondering if I should just settle for a denon

Oh yeah, would you call a dt250 laid back? I listen mostly to rock, and some classic, jazz.

From what I've heard, the DT250-80 is a laid back can, with dynamic, punchy bass. Perfect for rock. MooGoesTheCow says theyre bass bass bass bassiliscious.

I would THINK 7mW-PC would be enough for them. At 100dB/1mW at 80ohms, they should be very effecient. I can't say for sure, though.

Having driven the 250's from a number of 5mw sources, I can tell you they'll do as well as just about anything you could plug in and better than most. When you power the 250's with a good amp like a JMT CHA47 they sound just that much better. Downright magical in fact!

thanks for the speedy replies. The reviewer didn't say which dt250 she had - must have been the 250ohm version. She said she prefered the dt231 over the dt250 without an amp.

Even though I have a number of cans that do well without an amp, the difference WITH an amp is so dramatic in all cases, I do not intend to use any headphone without at least a portable amp like the Porta Corda or Airhead or CHA47 ever again. I currently have a Porta Corda and love it.
