Hi,

Wud like to know if squeezebox 3 does bitperfect output.
And does it have ASIO support?

Also, I would primary be listening to music on my Bose Triport Headphones(know they arent the best around) , so is the headphone amp on the SB3 good enough? And does it have a volume control for the headphone jack?

My alternative was to get a EMU0404 USB (source = laptop).
Reason being its bit-perfect output and good headphone amp.
Dont need the recording capabilities at all.

The bitperfect output is important to me so that I can get a great DAC later.

Can someone plz help me out

Thx

If you don't use the digital volume control, the Squeezebox 3 has bit perfect output.

When you listen to music files, the Slimserver software sends an audio stream directly to the Squeezebox over your wired or wireless Lan. That stream does not go through Windows audio facilities so ASIO is not relevant.

Note that you don't get a choice of music player software. You use Slimserver.

You can download Slimserver and the Softsqueeze s/w for free and try it out. Softsqueeze emulates a real Squeezebox on your PC. This lets you try out the Slimserver UI and the Squeezebox UI and see whether it meets your needs. Since the Softsqueeze sends output to Windows audio, the Kmixer issue is relevant in that case.

Just to verify, you mean set the volume on the SB to max right?

No.

To ensure that Digital Volume Control is disabled you have to go into options.

This one is found under the "Player Settings", under "Audio", there is an option called "Digital Volume Control", this must be set to "Digital output level is fixed".

I don't see "Options" anywhere. I see Settings -> Volume Adjustment; is this where I set this? Maybe I don't have the latest firmware...

That just ensures that you can't change it by accident. Leaving it at max is the same as disabling volume control.

In my opinion it's not disabled unless it's disabled. Of course, that's just my opinion I suppose.

2deadeyes, it's not under "Server Settings", it's under "Player Settings".

can a squeezebox play DVD-A if i'm using Power DVD Deluxe, which has 48/96 capability? and will it play normal computer sounds not coming from the slim software, such as an embedded youtube video or a warcraft game?

It's your opinion, and it's factually wrong. Leaving the volume at max outputs the exact same bitstream -- 100% identical -- as disabling digital volume control.

no, i guess you can not do that. you can only playback audio files in your computer using squeezebox its own media player. IMO, Squeezebox is a media player, but not a soundcard.

Whatever dude. You must have a lot of time on your hands.

Merry Christmas.

It is bit perfect and its bit perfect up to -30dB attenuation for 16/44 material.

Could you please give us some more information on this?

If the volume is changed before the signal is converted to analog then it must be done by messing with the 1's and 0's... and so it wouldn't be bit-perfect anymore...

am I missing something??

If the output is 24 bit, and the music is only 16 bit, then there's 8 extra bits to play with. You can still preserve the original 16 bits and just sort of move them further back (put some zeros in front).
