Does it matter what CD player to get if it outputs S/PDIF?

Is there a similar thing for slot loading players?

Not to my knowledge. I have tried using this CD mat ( remember: thickness 0.3 mm, as low as you can practically go ) and the slot on newer Yamaha players is simply too thin. I have not tried any other slot loaded players, there might be some out there that can be used with this Black Diamond CD Mat. But I have not tried it or heard of any such user. You can ask the seller from the link provided, he always answers any questions politely and in reasonable time.

Catch was that after one of my friends bought a new Yamaha CD(SACD?) player a couple of years ago as this new Yamaha transport sonically disposed of his Marantz DR6000 CD-R recorder. He was shocked to discover that DR6000 with the CD mat matched his new Yamaha.

"Where the hell you have been three months ago - I would have never bought a new player if I knew what CD mat can do..."

I unfortunately got the mat only a week before demonstrating it to him.

Quick question. I just found out that my motherboard has an SPDIF_Out 4 pin connector on it. Since I can get a cheap coaxial/optical module for it, should I be concerned about jitter?
