Does iPod gen matter with all the portable DACs out there?

Looking at getting another dedicated DAP, curious if the ipod gens are less crucial (i.e. gen 5 video) now that we have more portable DACs? Also, would it be better to bypass all of that and look at the ibasso player with an amp?

Yes, iPod gens do still matter. There are only a few DACs that are capable of passing the iPod's internal DAC such as the Fostex HP-P1. Unless you are using one of those, the iPod generation will make a difference.

+1. Certain iPods sound better than others, and very few DACs will work. If you want to use a DAC, I'd go with an iPhone 4 or 4S, as they are compatible with the most DAC/amp/battery cases as far as I know.
 
To your other question, a lot of people dislike the Apple line for high-end audio. There are many threads on this.
