I have the Panasonic F87 DVD player that plays HDCD. My receiver does not. So, am I sending the HDCD content when using the COAX digital out, or only if I use the analog outs??

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Unfortunately it won't be in HDCD format if your receiver cannot decode it. You'll have to use the analogue output if you want that.

You're technically still sending the HDCD content to the receiver when using the digital output, it's just that your particular receiver can't recognize it. So, yeah, what viper_45 said.

edit: however, depending on which DAC is better (the DVD player vs the Receiver) it may still be beneficial to use the digital out anyway. IMO, HDCD isn't all that fantastic and the DAC/Analog output stage quality should alone guide your decision.
