When foobar stores replaygain info (in the metadata right?) onto a file, and then that file is uploaded to an ipod through itunes, does the replaygain still take effect? I've heard that replaygain does a better job than Apple's "Sound Check".

I'm interested in the answer as well as I have ReplayGain tagged tracks that get transferred to both my ipod & sony players.

Easy to test, play two replaygain tracks with a considerble difference in volume (loud albums are Oasis)

Replaygain would work in rockboxed ipods

That's fairly obvious. But replaygain is the more widely supported meta data gain tag, as it works on Rockboxed players, Winamp, Sonos, Mediamonkey, Squeezebox, and other software music players.

Sound check is Apple's own system.

I really do not think so!
Apple use 'Sound Check' and neither iTunes or the iPods have support for ReplayGain.

You can use MP3Tag to convert the replaygain tag to a Soundcheck tag which your Ipod will read and adjust volume accordingly. Of course you can only choose one, album or track gain.
