I'm wondering if the four capacitors on the Tangent crossfeed board eliminate any possible need for input protection (C1) on the PIMETA board. If the crossfeed is put in front of the amp, signal-wise, won't the caps be serving essentially the same purpose?

The crossfeed's capacitors do not provide any protection. Take a look at the schematic and you will see that the majority of the signal goes straight through R1 and back out.
