I was just thinking, if Onkyo or denon or harman-kardon make portables?

Denon and Onkyo did....or probably more accurate that they sourced their portables from OEM sources.

Denon did make portable, I have one

You can probably still find them on places like ebay. Others here can better inform you about specific models and quality. I do remember the old "Stereo Review" testing the Denon and Onkyo units in one of those group comparison tests. I believe Technics was in that test as well.
