Do the Denon D5000's smooth out/ change some with burn-in?

IMHO, the best headphones I've had (and speakers, for that matter) have always been the ones that don't have something about the sound signature that reaches out and slaps me in the face. When they do, it invariably gets tiring.

The treble is not overly harsh, just slightly more in relation to the Senn 650's I have.

Which headphone in the world isn't harsh and sibilant in comparison to the HD650?

If you don't want highs, just stick to your HD650. As for the bass it's a D5000 issue, and one of the reasons why you shouldn't get the D5000. Either you learn to like it for what it is, or you can return it and get the D7000 or even the D2000 instead. Or if you are looking for closed backs with a more controlled bass I think you should look at the ATH closed backs.

I'm sure I'll get to checking those out at some point. As I said, these are really engaging headphones. Only certain music gets tough with the strong bass. Most of my listening is acoustic oriented with female vocals and the D5000 is very nice with that (preferrable to the HD650). It's a nice compliment to the HD650's, just slightly less refined in the highs.

my AHD5000 sounded not so good in the first day,but afterwards was a HUGE improvements, and than i knew what was the whole fuss about them!
but since than i really didn't notice any additional difference in sound, and i do believe in burn in. but they have a 300+ hours already.
their treble is a little piercing(but in a good way imo!)in some recordings, but i love it, i am also a grado fan so i don't mind a little extended treble.

the bass is more of an issue for me with the denons. it is unbearable in certain recordings. bass heavy rock tunes aspecially. i wouldn't mind some tightening.

I just did the partial markl modification- dynamatted the cups and rings around the drivers. I played some Mark Erelli songs from The Memorial Hall Recordings that I know have heavy bass, so much so that I would not even listen to them with the D5000. The bass is indeed tamed some now, although not as much as I had hoped. But it does just enough to make it okay to listen to. These tracks are the most bass heavy I have. All in all, for about 1/2 hour in work and no money (I had left over mat), it's completely worth it, especially considering you can undo it.
