Do lossless files sound better on portable players?

I have a question for you guys, and thought this would be the best place to ask rather than make a new thread. Do most MP3 players play songs with the same quality, or are some MP3 players significantly better than others? I Currently have a Sandisk: Sansa. Model e260. The only big problem I've had with it is sometimes when setting the equalizer to presets or my custom preset, some songs will randomly go quiet, and then after a few seconds, give off a crazy loud frequency that sounds like a fire alarm siren. Are there any nice music players that are around $50 or less, and support lossless formats such as Flac and M4A?

Thanks in advance.

The overall trend seems to be that on a portable with midrange gear, the difference between 320 and lossless doesnt justify the space sacrifices.  That doesnt mean there is no difference, it just means it doesnt justify the sacrifice in music selection for most people.
