oook, this is a double whammy question:
Firstly, i have a lot of korean/japanese song names for instance:

BoA - VALENTI - 04 -せかい の かつみ で

Now, when i name the id3 tag, with say WMP... it'll show properly as japanese. however, when played in winamp, i turns into ????

the second part is, because the iHP-120 can play winamp playlists, this is a function i use quite often, however i've found, when it hits a file such as above, it does a winamp and goes ??????

Does this happen on your players? is there a winamp patch that can fix this?

I have a iRiver iFP-390T and it does show chinese. You have to check that the japanese words are properly shown in the ID3 tag as that's where the iRiver reads the file info from. Not the filename. If you are running Windows XP, right click on the MP3 file -> properties.
Under 'summary' tab, make sure it showing in advanced mode.
If I'm not wrong, here's what iRiver takes to display:
Under the category 'Music', "Artisit"
Under the category 'Description', "Title"
So edit those fields accordingly

Maybe it's also worth upgrading the firmware to V. 1.40. I saw it fixed quite a few bugs, which some could be related to your problem, like "5. Fixed the bug that coudn't display correctly when ID3 tag contains both UNICODE and Local Code" (Japanese is unicode, right?).
