Do I really need a subwoofer for Audioengine A2+

how to set gain and crossover on subwoofer with A2?

You'll have to tune and experiment that since it depends on room acoustics, sub placement, etc. As a very rough guide:

1. Position sub first where it will be when you listen, even if the knob will be hard to reach, so it will be tuned for that placement. Preferably not too far from the speakers, not too low from them, no obstructions, and somewhere between them. Best placement will be behind your display monitor, or beside it, with the A2 monitors farther out from them but still positioned so you're in the center of the A2 monitors along with the display monitor.

2. Start with volume on A2 and gain on sub at minimum/zero and crossover at roughly 70hz.

3. Raise A2 volume to listening level playing a track you're familiar with. Now slowly or gradually raise the sub gain (and then go back to your proper listening position at each setting; unlike in cars, you don't have a wired remote for the sub nor preamp control from the receiver or processor for this) until the bass becomes overpowering, then back off a little bit.

4. Lower the X-Over until you get to a point where the bass is not too far up front and not easily localized to where the sub is (ie kick drums or other bass effects that normally should be at center needs to be centered), but if you hit a point where the bass is incoherent - ie mostly rumble with no punch - stop and raise it back to where there is still some punch to the bass.

5. Readjust the gain on the sub. Higher for more punch and rumble, lower for less localizable bass.
