Hello everyone
 
I have the Samson SR850 and a ASUS Xonar DG soundcard. I'm satisfied with the sound, but I was wondering if I needed anything else to improve it more, or is the sound card good enough for these? I don't have much experience with headphones honestly. My previous headphones was the HD428, and those were my first decent pair lol.

Keep the Xonar DG and make upgrading your headphone the next buy.
I have the SR850s are they are a good sound for a low price.

Any suggestions?  I read that the SR850 is a neutral sounding headphone, so I'd want another pair like that, but better. Not looking for anything real expensive right now (no more than $250). Around the ear.

Audio Technica ATH-A900X (Closed) headphones, will plug right into the Xonar DG
Digbuy has them on sale for $154.99, plus tax and shipping.
I paid $256 for mine

Just music. I listen to a lot of stuff. But I guess the main genres I keep coming back to are Jazz, Classical and rock.
I listen to a lot of female vocalists too.

ATH-A900X works very well with those genres. And it really is in the $200+ category of headphones. Just priced incredibly well right now.

I was actually looking at the ATH-A900X for a while now. They're $169 over at amazon too, so that's good.

 
Is there a huge difference between the ATH-A900X and the AD900x?

I haven't heard the AD900X. But if you are going to spend over $200, then you there are other headphones you might look into along with the AD900X, such as the Beyerdynamic DT880, Grado SR225i, AKG Q701 and Sony MDR-1R.

I'm going to guess the AD900X has a little less bass then the A900X.
 
When the older A900 and AD900 were compared, I believe the AD900 was the more preferred headphone.
I've been temped to get the AD900X, just so i can compare it to the A900X.

Alright, looks like they'll be my next headphone purchase. Hows the bass compared to the SR850? Better or worse?
I like the amount of bass from the SR850 btw. Although they do seem to lack some on the more bass heavy tracks I have.

Get an amp.  Whatever headphone you purchase, an amp will either ensure its neutrality, or reveal its advantages/disadvantages.  No sound card alone is going to be enough compared to a dedicated headphone amp.  With some headphones, it's true that it may not make much difference, but you'll never know for sure without the amp.

If you want try to change the sound of your SR850 (for better or worse) get some Velour ear pads.
You can find generic Velour ear pads for $15, on eBay, all the listed ear pads use the same size ear pads.
The Samson SR850, AKG K240/241/270/271 and Superlux HD681, HD-699, HD668B (all use the same size ear pad).
You might also try for some real leather ear pads.
 
If you do decide to "upgrade" from the SR850 headphones, wait until the last 3 or 4 months of the year, that usually when you get the lowest sale prices on headphones.

or just do an eBay search "Superlux Velour ear pads".
These "Made in China" ear pads will not be of the same higher quality as AKG, Beyer or Sennheiser (which are $35-$5) Velour ear pads, but more like fairly decent quality.
Superlux HD330, HD440, HD660 use a different size ear pad, then the SR850/AKG K240/Superlux HD681, etc
