I know this is probably “audiophile 101” fodder, but I’m getting conflicting information when I search on the web… some say you need a portable DAC, other things say the iPhone 11 has its own DAC, just use a lightning to 3.5MM jack, what say ye?
The DAC is in the Apple dongle itself and is very good. The iPhone runs my IEMs just fine. As cheap as the dongle is, I personally would start with that and see if you need anything beyond that.

The apple dongle is sufficient for most IEMs. It is quite neutral with good measurements and is very affordable at sub $10.
However, if you need to drive more demanding gear (low sensitivity and/or high impedance), then the apple dongle may not have enough power to drive them well. By driving well, I do not mean volume, but control - eg bass tightness, dynamics, soundstage etc).
For most IEMs other than outliers like the Final E5000, the apple dongle is good enough.
