Are CD lens cleaning discs just gimics? Has anybody stopped a CD player from skipping by using one?

I don't have any supporting data or expereince (I've never used one) but the going thought is that they cause more harm than good. There is concern that they will actually scratch the lens instead of cleaning it. The lens should be cleaned using the same principles as a camera lens, if at all.
