Hey there,

really just a simple question: Do amplifiers, specifically certain parts such as capacitors deteriorate over time? Does it depend on certain design principles (Class A, A/B etc.), average operating temperature (my Sugden is a space heater) and other factors?

Everything deteriorates over time. Amplifiers are no exception. Excessive heat, because of improper ventilation, will often excelerate deterioration.

Besides heat (get an small fan and aim it in the genreal direction to help remove heat, and also allow at least 2" on sides/back and 6" on top) excessive dust or fumes will accumulate on the pots and make them scratchy with time. Oh, and keep drinks away.

i second keeping drinks away from your amp. you should see what they have done to my liver

Like others have said, everything deteriorates but a good amplifier should last you at the bare minimum 10 years...other factors obviously will have an effect but 10 years should be the minimum with a modicum of care.
