One day online I had an American pointing out that I spell center wrong when I spell it "centre". He was flaming me to learn how to type properly.

Do Americans know that in Canada it is proper to spell centre this way?

Other words with Canadian/British spellings:

Neighbour
etc

I don't know. I spent 3 years in the IB program reading British publications and International english so I ended up adopting a lot of spelling changes like that. It's just sad that some people are so ignorant and would even flame you about it. Who else wants to join the club? Americans embarrased by Americans.

As with most things, it depends on which American you are talking about.

Agreed. If you are writing to the America that marries their sisters / cousins

it is amazing that they can spell "center" at all.

If you are writing to the America that communicates with gentlefolk from other great and wonderous lands...well, we know better, don't we

I take it you have no issue with the "cousin-marrying" comment? LOL.

I think the problem with "Americans" is that "we" (sigh) tend to assume that the way we do things is the right way to do things. I make sense of this by observing that we tend to be absolute about everything. (Case in point, perhaps.) We're still learning how to be moderate, whereas I think the Continental and Commonwealth nations seem to have passed through their imperial, teenage, angst-ridden centuries.

Then again, it could just be that our nation's adults don't want to pay to educate our young.

Or it could be that Americans are unfairly lumped together, and some of us are getting along just fine.

My wife works in Rockville Centre, NY. Did they spell the name from Canadian influance?

Point taken about the spelling, too many people think there is only one way to do anything, including spelling.
