DIY headphone update
Nov 22, 2002 at 4:12 PM Post #31 of 41
I payed a visit to that local hifi dealer today and had the chance to
listen to the phones hooked up to a pair of Linn solo monoblocks
and their partnering Klimax pre-amp using Linn,s CD12 as the
source...About £20000 worth of kit I think.

That solo /Klimax set up makes a fine headphone amp..hehe.
A definite improvement on the CD23/Rega Elicit combo[Bloody well hope so too

].

Anyway the the views of the retail business owner on the phones were based on a short audition of about 15-20 mins
of listening.
His basic observations were that there was some slight recessing
in female vocals and a small amount of 'tizz' in part of the upper
frequency spectrum coupled with some control issues in the bass
department.
A quick comparison with the stax 4040 system confirmed his views here but he felt his views were more based on his predominant speaker listening experience.
Also by comparison he felt that the stax set up to be a little more congested in sound...But to be fair to the stax it was not fed
by the same source so in my view that probably accounted for
this feeling[Got to defend the 4040s as I own a set ..hehe].

Overall though it was thumbs up and pretty well confirmed my
own observations.........Phew I was stressing over this audition!

I did ask whether I could borrow that Linn system though

Congrats, setmenu, great work! The carbon-fiber look is nice!

I'd like to take an earful of it.

SetMenu,

Great job with the cans!! Don't worry about the "chap" that doesn't know squat about headphones, take his opinion with a grain of salt. Wait until you get a chance to let someone with tons of actual headphone knowedge and experience to critique these awesome cans!!! Someone who is so used to speakers and has so little experience with cans will inevitably refer to their speaker experience vice making the proper evaluation of cans vs other cans to give you some constructive criticism and advice that will actually help with making improvements to your already awesome and revolutionary design!!

Keep going, and we look forward to reading about the Mk2c or Mk3!! Remember us little people when you make it big with this design!!!!!!

The guy who listened to the phones is cool I value his objective
input,He likes phones, selling Stax ,Grado ,Beyer and
Senn.
He has also expressed an interest in retailing 'specialist headphone amps as well
cool.gif
.
It is that like most he simply listens to speakers in preference and
sells equipment accordingly, as most purchasers want speaker
based kit.

cheers

Setmenu,

I surely hope you didn't misunderstand my humour (Canadian kind) as maybe someone else has. You mentionned in one of your posts that your family thought you a fool for the expenses and the time invested. Well the same was said of Mr Ford, and I think anyone tackling a project as technically complex and with the potential as yours does deserves all the praise we can give you. You are anything but a fool.

When you talk of adding red velvet and Chrome, I think of the next James Bond movie...

I apologise for any misunderstandings.

No misunderstanding, worry not.

Hehe..I would certainly like to build/design an amp for them
but first things first I still have a fair way to go with the phones
before I immerse my self in that complex subject.

My ultimate aim with this project would be a complete headphone
amp combo with delicious styling to boot, but that is some way off
for the while.

cheers
