In regards to DIY foamies, how could I go about putting the hole into a solid foam earplug so they'll fit the plastic tube of real ety foamies? Simply punching a hole in the foam doesn't work, as the foam bunches up around one point and won't compress...Honestly, don't laugh, this is harder than it sounds...

i find soaking the foam in warm water makes it expand much more quickly. so i soak it in warm water, punch a hole with a sharp rod and let it dry out while still on the rod. after it's throroughly dry you can remove it from the rod (wiggle the rod in a circle to widen the hole a bit) and the little hole in the center will remain for a while. you should be able to have enough time to stick the plastic tube inside.

a hot nail works too.
