Hi guys,
 
What would you recommend for Heavy Metal, mostly. I listen on my iPod Classic 250 Gb, no amps. Right now I use the Monoprice 8320's and they are great for a cheap in-ear. But want to hear what the next step is. Please bear my sarcasm, I'm full of it. 
 
I listen to a variety of music. Love classic rock, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Doors. A little bit of bass stuff, like Bass Mekanik. 
 
I don't really like Country. I appreciate the musicianship, but not my cup of tea.
 
 I can't stand (c)rap. I didn't grow up in a ghetto, I am not a gangster. I don't play "spades". I don't drink "gin n juice". That repulses me. They have no talent in my opinion. Which ironically is what "they" say about Metal.
 
But my true calling is Metal. Metal has lots of sludge and distortion. Be it slow, or blast beats. People with "talent" so to say. Working their mastery of guitar, bass and drums. I like discerning the different instruments. I like reproduction where the fast double bass drum isn't loose and flubbery. Tight and accurate.

Maybe if you gave a price range and what sound you prefer, we know metal so they have to be fast and punchy but that is about it

I must say I like the titles of some of the songs on the Devourment CD - Festering Vomitous Mass is a favorite... 

 
Actually sounds like Metallica "Master Of Puppets" recorded at 33 rpm and played back at 78...
 
I could see a time of the day where this would be appropriate. 
 
It is really angry speed metal so you need fast drivers - something in a small BA would work - but one that has some decent bass response. Or a fast dynamic like the RE400.

I'd like to see some recommendations at specific price points. I just want to know where quality upgrade outweighs price increase. And I'm not using an amp, not now at least.
 
Like I said, I have the Monoprice 8320's with T400 tips and they are decent.
 
All I know is that I'd give up music before I buy Beats... Overpriced garbage

I think there's a big jump at $100, some you can get cheaper on sale and some Asian companies come in lower but the $60-$120 price range in significantly better than the lower priced stuff.
 
The 215's are the cheapest set with removable cables, however they have a pretty rolled off treble but I have failed to find anything with the durability, right amount of extra bass and detail in the mids with more treble to recomend.
 
After $100 it just goes up, TF10's, GR07, UE400's, lots of good stuff

And I am totally biased against Sennheiser. I bought a pair of their sport earbuds, not IEM, for working out. When sweating, the sound lost all bass (noted that bass is spelled correctly) and sounded like tin cans on a string. Totally unacceptable for a sport. I think they were along the lines of the OMX 680.
 
Amazon looks to have a good deal on the Shure SE535-V, bundled with a FiiO E17 Amp/DAC for $599. 
 
Let me know your thoughts please.

Well, I am now the proud owner of ATH-M50's and a FiiO E17 for portable use. Mainly at work when I'm on night shift. It really makes Netflix sound so much better. I've been catching up on tv shows I never had time to watch. I have watched all of... Lost, Breaking Bad, Arrow, Walking Dead, and catching up on Dr. Who now.
 
I've been following the Let's Talk Metal thread and discovering new bands on Youtube. Makes the time go by!
 
What are good IEM selections at the $100 and $300 price points? I bought my wife the Bose MIE2i's for her iPhone 5S. She likes alternative and female vocalists, and hates bass. So I thought these would be appropriate for her.

I love how Fantasmic and Divine Conspiracy sound on the Westone 2 (included foam tips - Complys?) and Shure SE420 (Shure Olives; SE425 is the current version). The latter had more treble extension that just makes female vocals, particularly in classical-style, seem more "epic" and "grand" in the presentation (full-bodied in terms of all the high frequencies, but very smooth). The W2's weren't that far behind in treble but overall response was a little bit more even, with a little bit more body to the percussion. Also worked better with classic rock and other genres. Guitar shredding tracks sound a little better on the W2, but guitar god lead guitars benefit from the SE420's treble.
 
Brainwavz B2 is cheaper than both but IIRC there was feedback on the first version not really having enough bass. I haven't tried it though.

I haven't tried those but I got the M6P back in 2011, still a good earphone but too much bass boost that is hard to control. When I upgraded to the Aurisonics ASG-1 the bass wasn't distorting, and in most tracks didn't seem at all like there was less bass, just less of for example that mild headache-inducing bloom on the bass guitar.

I think I'm going to sell my E17 and headphones. Better gear is making me hate the way Metal is recorded. Maybe I'm too old and only remember the good old days...
