Hooked up my USB DAC today and was surprised to find the iTunes volume control (and the computer volume control) still working. Assumed they would be bypassed as I think of them as preamplifier functions. Couldn't find a way to disable them.

So what settings do I need to consider?

Mac Mini, Snow Lion, iTunes 11

Just keep it at 100%. Any setting other than that and it does a little fiddling with the data and ergo the signal. For example, reduce it low enough you get less than 16bits (or 24, whichever you started with); for those media players like VLC that have up to 200%, go over 100% and its already adding gain to the digital music that wasn't originally there (and presumably is more than Redbook standard, but of course thanks to the Loudness Wars, some albums are way over that standard ever since the master left the studio)
