Has anybody tried this piece of kit? It's a digital amplifier from Tripath that allows you to hook up regular speakers to your PC...

That may very well be ... the "card" doesn't actually require a PC. It just sits in any open slot. Looks like it takes an external wall wart for power as well. May as well be external ...

Actually upon second glance the Griffin is actually a USB audio adapter as well ... the Tripath looks to be nothing other than an amp.

As far as I remember, Yamaha's personal amplifiers/receivers (AP-Uxxx/RP-Uxxx use Tripath's digital amlifier ics, too. I haven't heard any Tripath-based product yet, though, but Yamahas stuff could be worth a try. It would be interesting to hear how their "silent cinema" fares against "dolby headphone"...
