Trying to think of a way to phrase this in a way that won't get me sent to the forum woodshed ... does anybody use different equipment or settings for older recordings? The difference between music I'm listening to recorded in the last 15 or 20 years compared to things recorded even in the 60's and 70's is often dramatic--now that I've invested in some quality headphones--with older music lacking a lot of the crispness. Some vintage albums that I've long loved through crappy speakers now sound like I'm listening to them through a motel wall in comparison to recent recordings. For some (Glen Gould's Goldberg variations is an example that comes to mind) my lovely new headphones seem to be doing little but pointing out the limitations of the original recording in an epic fashion.

Is it bad taste to want to put an equalizer in there?

Nothing wrong with that IMHO. Some cans amps and sources just sound better with poor recordings. Nothing wrong with adding eq either... Use your ears to guide you.
