This may seem like a noob question, but i would like to know what's the difference between the er6 and er6i! nothing on etymotic's site reveals anything apart from saying that the er6i is optimized for portable players. or something to that extent! i've also read that er6 has higher impedance, and that would probably require an amp to drive it right? (thanks Nuwidol)

Also, which one would y'all recommend! the sound i'm looking for is highly detailed and clear. sorta like sitting right in the middle of an acoustic concert!

thank you!

Thats about the jist of it yeah. The i have a lower impedance so are easier to drive with a portable i think. Also the i come with triple flange tips instead of bi flange.

I have both. The ER6i has a different size "stem" than the ER6 ... the ER6i takes a wider variety of ear tips, including the highly recommended Comply foams and the very highly recommended Shure black foams. They're both very good for acoustic and a lot of classical music.

x2 all etymotics manage to sound clean, the er6i are still light on bass but are still better going portable

Yes, ER6 will need an amp if driven from an ipod / similar DAP. Get the 6i if you don't have an amp.

Hmm another noob question! What happens if you try to connect directly to say an ipod with the er6. will there be no sound/sound be attenuated/bad bass or treble frequency response? and would a cmoy be sufficient to power it?

thank you!

Cmoy would be fine. The bass response added to my er6i's when I added an amp into the mix was HUGE. I realized how low on the bass they were. I have to sell my amp though so I'm back to low bass

I use my ER6 with my 5.5 G iPod (unamped) and they sound plenty good with more than enough available volume. Same goes for my 2G shuffle and Creative MuVo.

Of course with a nice amp they will sound even better.
