difference between ER 6 and ER 6i

Both of them can use all the same tips, except the ER6 can not use the triple-flange [which happens to be my favorite].

SQ wise, there's not really that great of a difference, but if you're going to use them straight out of an ipod [rather than with an amplifier], I'd definitely suggest the 6i.

The original ER6's were designed to be a cut down version of the ER4, aimed towards the portable market at the time when the market was driven by MD players and portable CD players. The ER6i was designed for the ipod market, emphasizing the bass response. I suggest getting the ER6i cause most people, including me, find the ER6 too lean on the bass unless you really want that analytical cut and dry sound. Of course, if you really want to go analytical, you might as well start looking at Westone solutions or the Ety ER4's.
