what is the differance between the grado 60 - 125? im gonna buy my wife some headphones and i have enough to buy the 125s but if there is very little differance than i might as well save some cash and just get her sr60s...

if you can have a look at the grado website, it lists all the details of each one and it easy to see what you are paying the extra money for. Personally i havent tried any of the ones you are looking at, ( i just went for the 325i )so I would suggest you buy the best you can afford especially if you intend to upgrade your source or add an amp at a later date.

my wife will likely never use a amp with her ipod. can the 125s be driven without an amp? or would i need one absolutely? how about the 225s? would i need an amp or could we do ok with just pluging it right into an ipod?

I own the SR-125's and have tried the SR-80's briefly for about 15 minutes. In terms of sound, if there were any real differences, I certainly didn't hear any. In all honesty, I believe what you're paying for is the 1/4" plug and better driver matching.

I'd just get the SR-80's since they have the 1/8" plug which will be more flexible. 1/8" > 1/4" adapters are much smaller than 1/4" > 1/8".

I haven't heard the SR-60's, but from what I understand they are the same except they have different pads. Some one will have to correct me on that.

All the Grados will be driven well out of the ipod, but the improvements in sound you are paying for with the SR-225 and higher don't really become apparent because the amplified signal is the limitation. The SR-225's should sound pretty similar to the SR-125's, SR-80's, etc straight out of an ipod, but once amped the differences will be apparent.

If you are using an unamped ipod, the SR-60's or SR-80's are the best choices in my opinion. They have an amazing bang/buck ratio and have 1/8" plugs, negating the need for adapters.

hmmmm well is it worth the jump from sr60 to sr80?

Don't forget the little brother to the MS2i; the MS-1. It has a very similar sound to the MS2i using the same "materials" as the SR-125 but costs roughly the same as the SR-80. It uses the same "comfy" pads as the SR-60 but has a four wire cable with the choice of 1/4' or 1/8" plug.

I have the 80's and they are great. It is true about amping the 225's. Once you amp those they really shine and you can tell the diff right away between them and the 80's.I briefly listened to the 60's at a dealer right when I was buying my 80's and they sounded more bassy but that is all I remember.I think the 80's would be the way to go. They sound great unamped.

X3 for the SR-80s...even after I purchased higher-end Grados, I still listen to these quite often out of my iPod (work setup) and I sometimes prefer them over my 325is.

I like the SR80s and SR225s most of the SR series. SR225s are better amped but SR80s are more road friendly out of the box with 1/8 plug.

Currently, my 80's are my work phones and my 225's are my home phones.

I tried both the SR80 and the SR60 and ended up with the 80's. The pads were more comfortable and the sound seemed a little fuller at the low end. they had a pair of 225's but since I couldn't plug them into my iPod, I didn't even listen (i figured it was the audio gods trying to save me some cash).

i wouldnt get my wife grado phones. i think women would hate them. i directly showed pictures of a bunch of headphones and earphones to my girlfriend, and let her decide. just like i expected, she picked in-earphones. she got a pair of mylarone x3.
