I am testing out the making of a removable cable mod for these old audiology headphones I have, just to test it out, and see if I have the ability. When I thought I needed a jack for it, I bought this.

I didn't realize I needed a mount, instead of just a plug. Is there anyway I can still do it, or did I just waste my $.

You could have the plug hang out of the headphone enclosure but it would look a bit messy. 
 
You'd be better buying a 3.5mm socket like http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103451 or http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062450
