I am interested in doing (or even having someone else do) detachable cable mods, both for my Grado SR80x and Beyer DT880 Pro.

Being a Focal owner I love the idea of 3.5mm jacks at the ear, but would that be too big? Seems like others do 2.5mm at least for Grado. Thoughts?

Any recommendations on next steps or someone who does these regularly?

On Etsy you can have it done, there's some specialists who do it there. Financially it's a disaster since the ones I see on eBay sell for less than a stock one. It's about $100 for most, plus you have to ship it to them and back. I have a DT880 250ohm but I wouldn't put any money into it when a good used pair cost that much.
An extension cable will prevent wear on the connector end for $4, what I use.

I am also a fellow grado/focal owner
I have moded my all my grado to take 3.5mm cable, the wooden ones are the most difficult to mod but the plastic metal cup are quiet easy.
now I only have one type of termination on all my cable which is convenient and save money

yeah, more and more i am leaning towards doing it myself. if i kill them, well i guess that helps me cull the headphone count :p

thanks for the info tho, will dig around on etsy to see if i can tell how easily 3.5mm fits (vs 2.5 which seems to be more common for modders)

The sr80 are easy to mod
All you need is a hotplate( I used an old wax heater ) a soldering iron and a steady hand
Remove the cup from the headband and gimbals
Place one at a time on the hotplate and cover with a towel then carefully pull them apart with a twisting movement
Cut the cable (I leave about 4cm) using the solder iron open up the cable slot to take the 3.5mm socket and solder
When reassembling use a hot glue gun to seal them
