Desperate k701 owner need help

701 does has nice deep bass (& dynamic too) if the amp has the muscle. It is good with natural instrument but not really for rock.

Maybe take your headphone and try it out in the shop on the Creek (hopefully they stock it).

I thought my K701 was dull and detached until I connected it to my LD MKV which really woke it up. From my experience, most K701 negatives are really judgments about the ancillary equipment rather than the K701 itself. It's a superb phone that needs to be burned in and a good, powerful amp to make it shine.

Make sure your equalizer or any other type of digital sound "enhancements" are off. My K501s, even when driven with cheap amps like the CMoy, do not sound muddy and I would imagine that K701s would perform similarly in this aspect. Perhaps you're not using the correct term or you're not being descriptive enough.

Hey Chefano, the 701 only sounds a bit threadbare before it is fully broken in. Although my 701 has deeper bass than my brand new and not-yet broken in Sennheiser HD 600, the midbass of the 600 certainly is more prominent than the 701. The slight brightness of the 701 that I had noticed originally is now gone with 350+ hours of use.

Don't believe the people who tell you it needs to be tubes for 701's, imo. I have SS for them, and I love it. It's about what presentation you want from your setup. But if you want tubes because you like tubes, then by all means...

Can't say about the NAD. Trawl the appropriate thread on the amps forum and see if anyone has experiences with it and the 701's. FWIW, my integrated was really nice with other headphones, but didn't have the balls for the 701's.

I think it depends on the valve amp; I am sure Zana Deux or Woo 5 more than apt to deal with 701. Whereas if the SS amp isn't too good, the result on 701 won't be good either. It is probably true that SS is more likely to be able to drive 701 due to higher power handling.

I am not familiar with iBasso D2-Boa, but I am guessing that you may need a desktop amp to deal with 701 - I sought of start off with just a 701 five months ago and ends up where I am now lol.....Thus depending on how you feel about upgrading, you may need to consider headphone that is easier to deal with.

Since iBasso is small, maybe take it to shop to see if it can drive 701.

Lastly, as you are probably aware, 701 is not good for rock etc.

If you want to use your iBasso then a different headphone would be much better.
